Warning signs
Signs you need brake repair
Your brakes usually warn you before they fail. Get them checked if you notice:
- Squealing when you brake: often the wear indicator on the pads
- Grinding or a metal-on-metal sound: the pads may be worn through to the backing plate
- A soft or spongy pedal, or a pedal that sinks toward the floor: possible air or a leak in the hydraulic system
- Shaking or pulsing in the pedal or steering wheel when you stop: often uneven or worn rotors
- The car pulls to one side when braking: a sticking caliper or uneven pad wear
- A brake warning light on the dash
- Fluid near a wheel or under the car
Grinding, a sinking pedal and fluid leaks shouldn't wait. If the pedal goes to the floor, don't drive the car: call us.

- Pad thickness at every wheel
- Rotor condition: wear, grooves and warping
- Calipers and hardware: sticking or uneven wear

- Brake fluid level and condition
Then we explain what we found and what it means.

Local roads
Brakes and New Jersey winters
NJDOT treats New Jersey's state highways with rock salt and brine in winter. Salt and moisture speed up rust on brake lines, rotors and hardware. If your car spends the winter on salted roads, have the brakes and lines looked at during your regular maintenance, not only when they make noise.

Brake repair questions
Frequently asked questions
Still have a question? Call and you'll get a straight answer.
Call (201) 664-6556Why do my brakes squeal?
Squealing often comes from the pads' wear indicator, a small metal tab that makes noise when the pads are getting thin. It can also come from glazed pads or loose hardware. Either way, it's a good time for a brake check.
Do I need new rotors every time I replace pads?
Not always. If the rotors are smooth and thick enough, they can often be resurfaced or reused. We measure them and tell you which option your car needs before we start.
Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
Shaking or pulsing when you stop usually points to uneven or worn rotors. Less often it's a caliper or suspension problem. We'll check the whole system to find the cause.
How often should I get my brakes checked?
Have them looked at during your regular maintenance visits, and right away if you hear grinding, feel a soft pedal or see a warning light. How fast pads wear depends on your driving, your vehicle and the roads you use.
Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?
Grinding often means the pads are worn through and metal is hitting the rotor, which reduces braking and damages the rotor. Drive as little as possible and get the car in soon. If the pedal sinks to the floor, don't drive it.
